AECOM
A highway section transformed into a multimodal pathway
Project Overview
The A50 Groby Road Corridor improvement project is a transformative infrastructure initiative funded by the UK Government’s Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) Transforming Cities Fund.
The project aims to convert a key highway section into a high street environment by introducing:
- Dedicated cycle lanes
- Enhanced pedestrian & cycle crossings
-
Safety improvements for all road users
To support this transition, AECOM partnered with ORIS to optimize pavement design by evaluating:
- Carbon emissions
- Cost estimation
- Material consumption over a 40-year lifecycle
Approach & key solutions
________________
- Multi-Scenario Pavement Analysis
Using ORIS, the project team generated multiple pavement scenarios, assessing:
- Carbon impact of various material options- Long-term cost efficiency over 40 years
- Sustainable material sourcing strategies
-
Rapid Data-Driven Decision Making
Within just one month, ORIS provided:
- Comprehensive carbon footprint calculations- Detailed cost projections for alternative designs
- Material lifecycle assessments
Impact & key results
________________
-
20% reduction in overall material costs, improving budget efficiency
- 43-55% reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with the UK’s sustainability goals
