AECOM

A highway section transformed into a multimodal pathway

Project Overview

The A50 Groby Road Corridor improvement project is a transformative infrastructure initiative funded by the UK Government’s Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) Transforming Cities Fund.

The project aims to convert a key highway section into a high street environment by introducing:

  • Dedicated cycle lanes
  • Enhanced pedestrian & cycle crossings
  • Safety improvements for all road users

To support this transition, AECOM partnered with ORIS to optimize pavement design by evaluating:

  • Carbon emissions
  • Cost estimation
  • Material consumption over a 40-year lifecycle

Approach & key solutions

  • Multi-Scenario Pavement Analysis

Using ORIS, the project team generated multiple pavement scenarios, assessing:

    - Carbon impact of various material options

    - Long-term cost efficiency over 40 years

    - Sustainable material sourcing strategies

  • Rapid Data-Driven Decision Making

Within just one month, ORIS provided:

    - Comprehensive carbon footprint calculations

    - Detailed cost projections for alternative designs

    - Material lifecycle assessments

These insights empowered AECOM and project stakeholders to make informed choices, balancing cost, sustainability, and durability.

Impact & key results
