Advancing Sustainable Rail: The One-Hour Train Project in Finland

Project Overview

The One-Hour Train is a high-speed rail link connecting Turku and Helsinki, a key initiative in Finland’s ambitious climate plan. Spanning 100 km between Espoo and Salo, the project includes:

  • 113 bridges
  • 22 tunnels
  • 200+ road crossings

To support sustainable infrastructure development, ORIS partnered with Turun Tunnin Juna (TTJ), equipping 150 project engineers with a digital tool to explore low-carbon and circular design solutions

Approach & key solutions

________________

  • Comparative Rail Track Analysis

Using ORIS, the team conducted multi-scenario evaluations of various rail track designs, ensuring compliance with local standards & railway regulations while optimizing:

    - Carbon emissions & environmental impact

    - Material circularity & recycling potential

    - Climate resilience & long-term sustainability

    - Cost efficiency & lifecycle performance

  • Digital Impact Assessment Dashboard

By integrating local material sourcing data, ORIS provided a real-time impact assessment on:

    - Carbon footprint reduction strategies

    - Recycling & circular economy options

    - Climate adaptation planning (40-year modelization)

    - Cost control over the project’s entire lifecycle

This data-driven approach enabled rapid identification of the optimal rail track design, aligning with Finland’s sustainability objectives.
